Competition Overview
The 2007 Princeton University Mathematics Competition (PUMaC) took place on Saturday, November 10.
The competition is designed for and open to all students under 20 years old and not currently enrolled in college (i.e. high school students, home-schooled students, and even younger students with high mathematical ability).
The competition comprised a power test given one week in advance, a team test, two individual tests per student, and an optional math bowl.
We now allow teams that cannot travel to Princeton to register for the Power Test alone. All of the information on this page is about the on-site PUMaC event. See the Power Test 2007 page for details about the separate Power Test competition.
This competition focuses heavily on teamwork. A full team comprises 8 students, but we will accept registrations of half-teams of 4 students. We'll try to combine half-teams into full teams, and teams that are combined will be notified via e-mail before the competition. Schools or other organizations may send multiple teams; however, only the first two teams from any school/organization will have a guaranteed spot at the competition.
Exciting New Changes
We listened to and read all of the feedback from students and advisers who participated in last year's contest, and we're proud to say, we've implemented most of those suggestions. Thanks so much for the ideas, and please keep them coming! We're always trying to improve! Anyway, here's a list (by no means comprehensive) of the exciting new changes we made for 2007:
- The competition date was moved up so that it's not so close to the holiday season.
- We replaced the relay test with a math bowl.
- Registration and changes to the team rosters were moved to an online database system. Thanks to Kevin Tian for designing this!
- We shortened the actual day of the competition (we can only push so much math into a day, and we thought we were reaching the supremum last year), and we e-mailed the power test to team advisers one week prior to the day of the competition.
- We revised the scoring system - see the Official Competition Rules 2008.
- Exclusive Princeton Math Competition merchandise was available for purchase (given out on the day of the competition) via our online database/registration site.
- We moved the location of the competition up campus to scenic McCosh Hall, East Pyne Hall, etc.
- Lunch was served outside (weather permitting) in the McCosh courtyard.
- We've diversified the awards we give out.
- The test subjects and format have been modified - see below.
- We provide multiple copies of the team test for convenience/efficiency.
Test Information and Format
There are four subject areas for the individual test. Each participant will take two of these subject area tests. The subject areas are Algebra, Geometry, Number Theory, and Combinatorics. Each test will consist of 10 questions of varying difficulty, and will be one hour long.
The team test is similar in format to the individual tests, but there is only one test covering all subject areas. Since all 8 people work together on this test, it is, of course, much more challenging than an individual test. The team test consists of approximately 10 questions of varying difficulty, and will be one hour long.
The power test presents an interesting definition or advanced concept to the contestants, and they are required to prove several results relating to this topic. One week before the competition (November 3, 2007), we e-mail the advisers with an electronic (PDF) copy of the power test.
Details to come on the optional math bowl.
The day concludes with individual finals (format to be announced) for top scoring contestants on the individual test, and an awards ceremony for the top contestants.
